Beat the Heat | Tips from our Ambassadors

Beat the Heat | Tips from our Ambassadors

Whether you're grinding up a gruelling mountain trail or cruising along a sun-drenched coast, riding in hot conditions is no small feat. At CIOVITA, our ambassadors know this all too well. They come from diverse disciplines and riding styles, but when it comes to conquering the heat, their advice aligns: preparation, adaptation, and the right gear make all the difference.

Here are their top tips to keep you cool and comfortable on those sizzling summer rides:

Kevin Benkenstein: Dress Light, Ride Right

“Breathability, moisture management, and light weight are the three key features for a summer outfit,” says Kevin.

His go-to gear includes:

  • Sentiero Bib Shorts: Lightweight and breathable.

  • Light-coloured jerseys: For optimal heat reflection.

  • Versa gloves: Essential in humid conditions to manage sweat.

  • High Top Socks: To keep feet cool and comfortable.

Kevin’s strategy is simple: prioritise fabrics that release moisture quickly and choose light colours to minimise heat absorption.

Mamello Letsie: Ice It, Cool It, Unzip It

Mamello’s practical tips make a world of difference:

  • At waterpoints, grab some ice and pop it into your jersey.

  • Riding solo? Pour water on your neck for instant relief.

  • “Open the bonnet”: Unzipping your jersey allows better airflow to regulate your temperature.

These small adjustments can prevent overheating while keeping your ride enjoyable.

Courteney Webb: Listen to Your Body

For Courteney, staying safe in the heat means understanding your body’s signals.

“Recognise the signs of dehydration,” she advises, particularly for women whose body temperatures can fluctuate. Her checklist includes:

  • Light-coloured, breathable clothing.

  • Hydration beyond just water (think electrolytes).

  • Planning refill stops on your route.

Most importantly, Courteney warns against pushing through symptoms like goosebumps in extreme heat. “Your body is talking to you. Listen.”

Kent Main: Stay Cool and Resilient

Kent believes hot-weather riding is as much about mental toughness as physical preparation:

  1. Hydrate consistently: Sip regularly, and include a mix of electrolytes and carbs to replace what you sweat out.

  2. Smart dressing: Lightweight jerseys and opening up on long climbs help regulate core temperature.

  3. Proactive cooling: Use ice stockings and splash cold water on yourself during rides.

  4. Pace yourself: In high heat, survival trumps speed. Dial it back and enjoy the ride.

Simon Stofberg: Adapt and Respect the Heat

Simon’s philosophy is about preparation and gradual adaptation:

  1. Sunscreen is non-negotiable: “Reapply often. What? You think you’re stronger than the sun?”

  2. Hydration points matter: “Whether it’s a water station or your gran’s house, make sure you’ve got places to refill. Gran’s house might even come with cookies.”

  3. Electrolytes and salt tabs: “Sweat, sweat, baby! Cramping isn’t cool, so replenish those minerals.”

  4. Adapt to the heat: “Heat training takes time. Don’t be a hero and start with a four-hour midday ride. Build up slowly, like you’re making a fine stew.”

  5. Respect your limits: “Heat affects your heart rate and power. Don’t force it; your body’s adjusting to a new kind of stress. Play nice.”

Despite their unique styles and approaches, our ambassadors share a unified message: preparation is key. Choosing breathable, lightweight gear and managing hydration are non-negotiables. They also emphasise the importance of listening to your body and respecting its limits in hot conditions.
