How to Start Mountain Biking: A Beginner's Guide for Women

Thinking about trying mountain biking but not sure where to begin? You're not alone.

For many women, taking that first step can feel intimidating. Questions around fitness, confidence, equipment, and experience often hold people back before they've even started. That's exactly why Trail Angels exists.

Founded in 2012, Trail Angels has introduced hundreds of women to mountain biking through supportive coaching, welcoming group rides, and an incredible community of like-minded riders. We sat down with the team to talk about how it all started, their advice for beginners, and why it's never too late to give mountain biking a try.

Tell us a little about Trail Angels. How did it all start?

After my last Absa Cape Epic in 2011, I was frustrated by how few women were taking part. I knew there were so many women who wanted to ride but didn’t know where to start or didn’t have the confidence to join a cycling group. So in 2012, I founded Trail Angels with one simple mission: to get more women on mountain bikes and help them discover just how capable they are. What started as a small group has grown into an incredible community of women of all ages and abilities who ride, learn, laugh and support one another.

What made you want to create a women's mountain biking community?

Mountain biking can feel intimidating, especially when you’re starting out. Many women don’t want to be the slowest rider, hold the group up, or ask “silly” questions. I wanted to create a safe, welcoming environment where women could learn at their own pace, make friends and build confidence without judgement.

If someone has always wanted to try mountain biking but doesn't know where to start, what would you say to them?

Don't wait until you feel fit enough or brave enough—just start.

Every experienced mountain biker was once a beginner. The hardest part is taking that first step, but once you do, you'll realise how supportive and rewarding the sport can be.

What's the biggest thing that holds women back from giving mountain biking a go?

Fear. Fear of falling, fear of not being fit enough, fear of not keeping up, or simply fear of the unknown. The reality is that with the right coaching and supportive people around you, those fears quickly turn into confidence.

Do you need an expensive bike to get started?

Absolutely not. A reliable, well-maintained entry-level mountain bike is more than enough to begin your journey. It’s far more important to invest in learning the skills than spending a fortune on the latest bike.

What are the basics someone needs before their first ride?

A mountain bike, a properly fitted helmet, comfortable clothing, water and a willingness to learn. Most importantly, bring an open mind and don’t compare yourself to anyone else.

What does a typical beginner ride with Trail Angels look like?

It’s relaxed, supportive and fun. We stop often, explain the basics, work on simple skills and make sure nobody gets left behind. There’s plenty of chatting, lots of encouragement and always a coffee afterwards.

How do you help new riders feel comfortable and confident?

We break everything down into manageable steps. Our qualified coaches focus on skills before speed and celebrate every small win. Being surrounded by other women who are learning too makes a huge difference because everyone understands exactly how it feels to be a beginner.

What's one thing you wish every beginner knew?

Confidence doesn’t come before you start—it comes because you start. Every ride teaches you something new, and progress happens one pedal stroke at a time.

Is there anything you wish someone had told you when you first started riding?

That it’s okay to walk a section of trail. Walking isn’t failing—it’s learning. The goal isn’t to ride everything immediately; it’s to build confidence so that one day you can.

What's been one of your favourite beginner success stories?

There have been so many. One that stands out is watching women who arrived convinced they’d never ride off-road go on to complete events like Wines2Whales and even the Cape Epic. Seeing someone transform from “I can’t” to “I did” never gets old.

What keeps women coming back to Trail Angels?

The friendships, the encouragement and the sense of belonging. Yes, we ride bikes, but Trail Angels is about so much more than cycling. It’s about finding confidence, challenging yourself and becoming part of a community that genuinely celebrates each other’s successes.

What do you love most about mountain biking?

The freedom. There’s something incredibly special about being out in nature, switching off from the stresses of everyday life and discovering places you’d never see from a car. Mountain biking constantly reminds you that you’re capable of more than you think.

If someone is thinking about joining Trail Angels, what can they expect?

A warm welcome, qualified coaching, plenty of laughs and absolutely no judgement. Whether you’ve never ridden before or you’re training for your next big event, you’ll find women who will encourage you every step of the way.

Finally, what's your biggest piece of advice for anyone thinking about giving mountain biking a try?

Don't let fear make the decision for you.

Say yes to the adventure.

You don't have to be fearless—you just have to be willing to start. The confidence, the fitness, the skills, and the friendships will all follow.
